How can I tell if I’m walking my soul path?

One of the things that people on a healing and a spiritual path have in common is a sense of purpose. We feel that we are here to do something, and usually it is something that sits outside of what is considered to be ‘normal’. In the ordinary world, in our culture, we are told that there are certain things we must value and strive for. To own a home in a good part of town, to get promoted at work, to be rich, to be beautiful, to be thin, to be married, to be a parent… that we should go through our lives ticking boxes as we achieve each goal.

Now, there is nothing wrong with being rich and beautiful, or with having rich, beautiful babies as well. My issue is that these goals are set outside of ourselves. Before chasing after them with all our might, we would be well advised to check if we are chasing things that we ourselves actually want. How many stories have you read of people who have ‘everything’ and yet are unhappy, but they don’t know what is missing?

The way I see it, we need to identify what we as individuals feel passionate about and live our lives based on that. For those of us walking this amazing spiritual path of healing, we have already identified that there is something that we are driven to do. The need to follow the path resides right in the core of our being, and that need pushes us forward. That need is what stops us giving up on our journey and devoting our energy to something more conventional instead, (probably while pretending that we never did have that big spiritual awakening anyway, it was just a phase).

That’s awesome – but what does it all mean? I need some clarity!

The feeling of being driven to understand ourselves, to heal, and to connect with Source (however you may define and experience that) is familiar to you all. But as a soul purpose, a reason for being here, it’s a bit bloody vague. I know that many of you will have worked to understand your soul purpose and the path that you are on in more detail, asking what work it is that you are here to do. I go deeper into this question every year! I don’t claim to have the big answers and know every detail of the reason for my existence, but every year I learn more about what I am here to do and what I am here to learn.

The duality of soul purpose

I like to think of my soul path as comprising two main things: my service and my lessons. There I things that I am good at and these indicate the service I am here to perform. (There is still room for drilling down deep into that to get to the details, for example ‘I am here to be a healer’ is pretty vague, while ‘I am here to facilitate healing for people who have suffered x, y and z’ is getting into the detail of your service. I’ve talked before about the importance of knowing who we are here to serve and I still maintain it is one of the most important things to be aware of as we walk this path of service.)

Understanding our service

Do you understand the service you are here to perform? You have been born with natural gifts, a way of being that comes naturally to you. These natural talents hold the clues to the work that you have chosen to do in the world in this lifetime. This is the aspect of soul purpose I call ‘service’.

I am a priestess by nature, and shamanism is at the core of my being. The ability to move in and out of non ordinary reality comes naturally, so does healing, and most of all the ability to share those skills with people, getting them excited enough about it to change their lives. Although I work hard to put this message out into the world, the work itself it not hard for me. Any training I have done is just remembering things I already knew, it’s as though I successfully learned it in another life and this time around I came to help people change and heal, through shamanism and spirituality. I understand that this is my service.

Understanding our lessons

Shamanism and healing are both paths of service. To be a priestess is also a path of service. It is therefore unsurprising that I am so focused on that aspect of my life. Some time ago now I realised that I had been neglecting the other side of the soul purpose duality. Knowing what you are here to do for others is only half the story, there is another question we must ask if we are truly to understand ourselves: what am I here to learn?

Remember that the service you are here to perform draws on your natural abilities. The world’s greatest artists and musicians came here to bring beauty into the world. For them to have incarnated as rubbish painters, or with no innate musicality, would be absurd. Like a lot of us, they showed early signs of their gifts. They were born with innate talents, as though they already knew how to play, how to sculpt – they were predisposed to performing this service in the world. It came easily, in the sense that the drive, passion and talent was already present. Your service is the same, you know you need to do it, you love it, you can’t not do it. You understand and embrace it as who you are.

Lessons are different. When we chose to incarnate, we chose something that we really need to learn this time around. My lesson is not to explore shamanism and healing – that is a natural part of my being, it is easy for me. How silly to choose a lesson that we have successfully learned before! No, we must understand that our lesson is something that we do not already know.

I’ll share a little about mine: it’s ‘real world’ stuff. Channel enlightened beings through trance possession? Sure! Journey to another realm to communicate with supernatural creatures? I’m your girl. I function very well in non ordinary reality. But ordinary reality – oh, that’s another matter. Keeping on top of paperwork, making wise financial decisions, being fully in control of my every day life? It’s the biggest challenge ever. Living as a creative, spiritual person and being strong and grounded in the real world is my lesson. I don’t like it. Why didn’t I pick something easier, something I know how to do? Of course, that’s the point.

How can I get clear on my service and lessons?

Well, good question. As I have said, I delve into this continuously and presume I will do so until I die, getting a clearer understanding as I go on. You will have your own preferred ways of connecting in to such big questions and receiving guidance, here are the ones that work best for me:

  • Journeying
  • Channelled writing
  • Devotional work with deity
  • Asking for answers in dreamtime
  • Drumming with intention
  • Meditation

Basically, any personal practice undertaken with the intention that it will reveal more about your soul path will lead to you receiving more information. It might not be instant (or it might!) but it will work. Persist.

This is all very lofty stuff – but how can we bring this awareness into day to day life?

Wouldn’t it be cool if, as well as having some sense of a purpose our soul wishes to fulfil in the wider sense, an overarching theme that hangs over all that we do like some kind of cosmic canopy, we could also apply our awareness of being on a soul path to our day to day living? Wouldn’t it be cool if we could remain mindful of this while living day to day life, making day to day decisions? Yes Kay, it would be cool.

I’ve mentioned before that I often do this by journeying on my decisions, and I really recommend this practice. In a previous blog post, I gave some simple tips on how to choose between different options.

Another regular practice that I have now is my soul path meditation, which has worked so well for me and is so popular with my clients that I am now making it available for you guys too.

The soul path meditation

This meditation is based on a vision I saw while being led on a meditation into my heart centre, led by Bhavna Mistry of Life Healing Values. I love Bhavna’s work, she holds a great energy and allows people to go to a deep place where they can receive amazing wisdom. Held in that energy I saw a path that represented the journey my soul had chosen to incarnate for, as well as whether I was on that path at any given point in  my life. Sometimes, I could see that I had wandered off my soul path, doing things that didn’t serve what I was here to do. This gave me the idea that I could check in with this visual construct at any time, to see if what I was doing (or thinking of doing) would actually be in line with my soul’s true path. I use this meditation so frequently now, and it is so illuminating!

Basically, this meditation give you a sign post, a visual guide, that allows you to see whether you are really working in line with your soul purpose – or whether it’s a red herring, you are being motivated by something else, something external. It’s perfect for if you are feeling a bit lost or confused about your path, or when you are considering a big change in your life, to give you an idea of whether your actions are taking you further along your true soul path, or away from it!

It’s a 20 minute audio track, comprised of clear explanation and guided meditation.  This meditation can be used over and over again, and the information gained can be integrated into your own meditations and journeys for the future (I refer back to mine all the time).

This powerful meditation costs only £3.75. To order yours please email me for straightforward payment details; your mp3 will be dispatched once payment is received. You will hear from me within one working day.

For those of you who have done this meditation – how has it been helpful for you? I’d love to hear a bit about your experiences so please comment below!

I recently did the Soul Path meditation and found it a very powerful experience. I hadn’t connected my path, my purpose for being with the actual, physical person that is “me” before this. I came to the meditation with no preconceptions about what would be revealed, not entirely convinced that my Soul Path would be shown to me as lots of daydreaming about it hadn’t bought about any great clarity. I began in a place I use a lot for meditation and from there and to my surprise a definite, undeniable and very beautiful pathway was shown before me – it actually took me by surprise. I had a vision of walking along its beauty followed by my children, as if they were part of this journey too though the path was not theirs. Now I feel the beauty of that experience is written on my physical heart and is so much a part of me that all I need to do to reconnect is rest my awareness there and breathe into it. Thanks Kay for an awesome meditative experience! xxx

I did this meditation today and it gave me some great insight into how I am continually moving away from my soul path as I rush to try to get to the next experience instead of living in the moment. Thank you Kay for sharing this with us.

I did this meditation twice just to check back in with a two week gap. The first meditation showed me a path where it was nothing but gold, my own yellow brick road! There was a bridge ahead but I couldn’t move. Suddenly a lady chasing a dog crossed my path and I was easily distracted watching for the outcome. I guess the message was about keeping my focus…
In the second meditation my path was presented immediately. Surrounded by lush nature everywhere, my path was a nature path right in the middle of it all, leading far off in the distance. I felt more resonant with this path, I felt ready to start walking…
    Blessings Kay xXx
